Chess is a competition of strategy.

Chess is a game that has been around for 1,500 years since the 6th century AD and spread to Persia. When the Arabs conquered Persia, chess was taken up by the Muslim world and subsequently, through the Moorish conquest of Spain, spread to Southern Europe.

In Europe the rules for the way the pieces moved changed for single moves for each piece in the 15th century to how we play now.  In the second half of the 19th century, modern tournament play began.

Chess clocks were first used in 1883, and the first world chess championship was held in 1886.

The 20th century saw advances in chess theory, and the establishment of the World Chess Federation (FIDE).  Chess engines (programs that play chess), and chess databases became important. Chess was and is a very popular game now and as it was back then.

Mr. Joe Hubbell started the chess club this year. “There was an interest from the students. I also like chess, and I have been playing for 30 years, so it all came together,” said Hubbell. “I like the strategy having to think ahead of my opponent and getting very competitive.”

Chess is not just liked by the older folk, but also by the younger folk too. Abner Diaz, a sophomore at Nipomo High School, is part of the club. “I like chess because I like the strategy game and the drill of competition,” he said. “Yes, I do recommend the chess club it’s a good time to pass the time with your friends,” he said.

So if you are interested in strategy and friendly competition come and join the chess club.

The meet in the NHS library during lunch every Wednesday. All are welcome to come play.
